ANTHONY SMITH, CHESS & STEM TUTOR Hi! I’m Anthony. I have a degree in Computer Science and IT, and along with teaching coding, math, and science, I’ve been playing and studying chess for years. I love working with kids of all levels—whether they are total beginners who don't know how the pieces move yet, or players who know the rules but get stuck on what to actually do once the game starts. Honestly, a lot of kids quit chess because people make it feel like boring homework. I don’t teach like that, and we don't just wing it, either. I build a clear, step-by-step plan tailored to where your child is starting. If they’re brand new, we make learning the pieces and basic rules fun and easy to remember. Once they have the basics down, we play games, solve puzzles, and talk through what’s happening on the board in plain English. I focus a lot on how to slow down, spot traps, and not get frustrated when you make a mistake. Everyone blunders in chess—the real skill is staying calm and figuring out your next move. Because I also tutor computer programming, math, and science, I approach chess the same way I teach STEM: by breaking big, overwhelming problems down into simple, bite-sized steps. Chess and coding use the exact same part of the brain. Both are all about logic, spotting patterns, and testing out ideas to see what works. Instead of just memorizing moves, we talk about the why behind a strategy so your kid can actually use that logic in their next match—and in the classroom. When I’m not teaching, coding, or playing chess, I’m usually training at the gym, playing video games, or hanging out at home with my girlfriend and our kitten. Whether your child wants to learn chess from scratch, level up their game, or get a boost in coding, math, and science, I’d love to work with them!
