Hi, I'm Kamau Holston, a swimmer, musician, and Pokemon fan with a Bachelor's in Individualized Study & Musicology from NYU, and over 10+ years of educating experience—both in the pool and in the classroom. Much like my college major and interests indicate, I am a multi-faceted individual with a multitude of skills and experience to bring to any classroom setting. My teaching philosophy focuses on fun, and the idea that any kid is a fast learner when they're engaged and having fun. Regardless of the activity, I am always looking to make sure my students feel the mental stimulation necessary for learning—as that stimulation makes it so much easier to learn, and imbues students with a love of learning, a love that starts to incubate when learning becomes more than just a lesson or a lecture. Outside of teaching, I am a working musician and am generally either playing shows or working on new music and merchandise. My time performing, combined with my teaching, has given me great tools for commanding an audience and staying relaxed under pressure. Outside the classroom, you might find me biking, selling my music t-shirts at the park, or spending time at the arcade. Before teaching, I performed professionally as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, which gives me a unique perspective on connecting performance skills with education. When I'm not in the classroom, you'll find me songwriting or volunteering at community music events.
