New York City

  • I LOVE Shakespeare
  • I've been a Pokemon fan since I was two years old
  • I have two cats!

Good morrow, gentles all! I'm Emerson Helmbrecht, a teaching artist who specializes in social emotional learning through performance and collaboration. I trained at the Stella Adler Arts Justice Division where I worked with people in recovery for addiction and the formerly incarcerated. My most recent contract was teaching William Shakespeare's Macbeth with the non-profit theatre company Apocalyptic Artists Ensemble, where I engage students grades 7-12 to think like artists across the boroughs. My teaching philosophy centers on something Pablo Picasso said, “It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.” Children are inherently creative, and while this creativity may decrease into adulthood, with consistent practice and play, children can retain that light and spontaneity that are so important. Besides teaching, I am a working actor and director. I've been in Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, The Comedy of Errors, and The Winter's Tale. I've directed off-off Broadway, and work as an acting coach for young people. Outside of art, I love collection Pokémon cards, playing video games, and hanging out with my cats: Klaus and Cherry.
