I am drawn to this opportunity due to the school's commitment to rigorous, high-level thinking, student-centered, experiential, and well-balanced teaching approaches. I am confident that my academic background, teaching qualifications, diverse teaching experiences, and passion for teaching Chinese language and nurturing global citizens, making me an excellent candidate.
With over 18 years of experience instructing Mandarin at all levels in K-12 settings, particularly at the Upper School level, I have consistently enhanced Mandarin curricula with rigor and innovation. My focus on experiential learning, differentiated instruction, and assessments tailored to diverse learner needs has contributed to the holistic development of students. Collaborating with middle school Mandarin teachers, I have streamlined and enhanced cross-division Mandarin courses. Additionally, I offer electives exploring Classic Chinese philosophies, Modern Chinese Literature and Arts, and US-China relationships, utilizing New York City's vibrant resources and virtual platforms to enrich students' language learning and cultural immersion experiences.
In my Mandarin language classrooms, students are central to our focus, engaging in diverse and individualized activities to enhance their four language skills. Through dynamic opportunities, students elevate their Mandarin learning across Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. In my electives, we delve into classical Chinese philosophies and literatures, analyzing their impact on modern China's daily life. Topics explored include education, the political system, economic policy, diplomatic relationships, societal challenges, and US-China relationships.
I actively engage in ongoing professional development in education, foreign language education, educational technology, Diversity & Equality work, and more. I presented at the 2019 Global Language and Culture Conference on how Calhoun utilizes New York City as a campus
