“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”—Pablo Picasso
Jean Segarra-Rosa earned her BFA in Illustration from Pratt Institute and has
worked as a professional artist and art educator for over 20 years. Her talents
include cartooning, illustration, mural making and Photoshop. Clients include
Marvel Comics and DC comics, and has worked as an artist on various television
shows such as SuperWhy!, Go Diego Go, Dora the Explorer, and Dora and
Friends.
She is also a painter that has exhibited in many galleries including Taller Boricua,
The Williamsburg White Room, Longwood Gallery, The Bishop Gallery, The A.I.R.
Gallery, B.A.A.D., Ocean Hill Art Sanctuary, and The Distillery in Hoboken.
Her earliest artistic influences include masters of illustration Frank Frazetta, Boris
Vallejo and Patrick Nagle, as well as graffiti art and comic artist Vaughn Bode. During her college years she studied under illustration legends David Passalaqua and Rudy Gutierriez. It was during this time she became aware and inspired by classic and cultural art--most notably the art of Pablo Picasso, pre-Columbian and Yoruba art.
Although she has exhibited her paintings in numerous galleries throughout the
boroughs and New Jersey, she does not consider herself a “fine artist”, but rather an illustrator who loves to paint. Merging her influences of Illustration, cultural and
urban art, she predominately paints portraits that illustrate and illuminate desire,
spirituality, reverence and remembrance.
Jean lives Brooklyn, NY and works as a freelance artist and art educator.
