Hi, my name is Mengxi Yang. I am an animation artist and art educator currently based in Los Angeles, CA. I have been teaching for more than a decade, with a BFA degree from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA degree from California Institute of the Arts, both majored in animation.
My work focuses on hybrid animation techniques and non-fictional filmmaking. Since receiving my MFA, I have been active as an animator and educator on various projects. I worked as an animation instructor on the CalArts Community Arts Partnership in July 2022, and as an animator/fabricator on the stop motion episode of Ted Lasso in November 2021. I was also the creative director for the award-winning stop motion documentary short Growing Up Behind Barbed Wire in April 2022 about the history of Japanese incarceration camps, which was shown in film festivals as well as high school classrooms nationwide.
Teaching is an essential part of my career and I have sufficient experience to teach at the level of your students. I have created syllabuses for both long term classes and short format workshops for the same age group from 10-18 at Venice Arts and at the Deerfield Academy Summer Arts Camp. I introduced stop motion techniques such as claymation, pixilation and light painting animation as well as animation history and theories. In my semester-long classes I focused on collaborative projects that give the students opportunities to learn about teamwork and the basic pipeline of a stop motion production - character design, fabrication, animation, and sound design. Additionally, I have strong connections with contemporary animation artists from both CalArts and RISD. These contacts will be essential for directing students to appropriate professional resources.
Through my teaching I hope to both impart essential technical skills to the developing artists, writers, and directors of TogetherHood, and to expand their horizons as thinkers and creators.
