I’m Effy Jo Neumann, a NYC based dance and cheer instructor with a BA in Dance and Psychology from Barnard College of Columbia University. I teach elementary through high school students in school and studio settings, offering classes in jazz, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, and cheer. My background includes training at Broadway Dance Center and serving as Dance Chair of the Columbia University Dance Team, where I developed my skills in choreography, leadership, and performance. My teaching philosophy centers on helping students feel confident, supported, and excited to learn. I believe dance and cheer offer children opportunities to express themselves, work together, and take pride in their progress. Whether a student is trying dance for the first time or has years of experience, I want them to feel that they belong. My background in both dance and psychology informs how I approach teaching. I adapt lessons to students’ ages, interests, and skill levels, balancing technique and choreography with creativity and play. I encourage students to ask questions, try new movements, and support their classmates. In cheer classes, I also emphasize teamwork, musicality, and school spirit. Dance has been a meaningful part of my life since childhood, and I love sharing that joy with my students. As a teacher, some of my favorite moments are seeing a quieter student become comfortable performing or watching a group celebrate learning a new routine together. I want parents to know that their child’s effort, individuality, and growth are valued in my classroom.
