Pengfei Z.
Professor and math educator
Boston
- I've served as a bus chaperone on summer math camp trips.
- I build machine learning models to predict NBA game outcomes.
- I like game theory, including the math behind games.
I am Pengfei Zhang. I earned my Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2011, and have since taught at Peking University, UMass Amherst, the University of Houston, Ole Miss, and the University of Oklahoma, where I was an Assistant Professor from 2017 to 2023 and an Associate Professor from 2023 to 2025. I meet students where they are, then push them just enough to make growth feel natural. What sets me apart is combining a researcher's depth with a teacher's patience, especially through contest training and mentorship. Success isn't just grades. It's the moment when one stops saying "I'm not a math person."
