Class Description

Bring your kids and learn about lots of different genres, time periods, and musical instruments. Each few weeks we will talk about a different style of music (bluegrass, jazz, classical, folk, etc). We will sing two or three songs from each genre, look at all the different instruments unique to those genres, and sprinkle in a few fun facts and some historical context along the way. We'll also learn about some important musicians and composers from each genre. We will learn the different types of instruments and the kinds of sounds they make (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion). This class works best if parents accompany their kids and learn the songs with them, though it is not mandatory. (Note: this is not necessarily a 'world music' course, I choose from the genres that I know the most about, and when we sing most or all the songs will be in English. The genres covered mostly originate in Europe and North America, although if any parents have a specific request and wish to show a certain culture's music to the class, this would be more than welcome.)
