About the course
The “Big Backyard” is an exciting outdoor adventure program designed to get your child into the wild and stoke their curiosity about nature, while also learning about science and math in a fun and creative way. The curriculum has been designed with the New Generation Learning Standards in mind. We will study a section of Central Park using measuring techniques, our five senses to describe our surroundings, and report our observations using different charting methods of how the park changes!
At the end of the semester we will find innovative ways to present our findings by creating art using artifacts found in nature, writing poetry inspired by our outdoor exploration or making booklets with graphs, descriptions and drawings.

Madeline is a teaching artist, actor, dancer and singer from Averill Park, NY. She graduated from Muhlenberg College with a BA in Theatre and minors in mathematics and dance. While she moved to NYC to pursue theatre she is passionate about sharing her dual love of performing and STEM with children. Madeline believes that it’s important to for children to see that it’s cool to have varied interests, even ones as different as mathematics and the performing arts. Most recently she toured the country performing with TheaterworksUSA's “Pete the Cat” and when she is not performing she is teaching theatre, dance and math to students all over NYC. Madeline is excited to be joining the Togetherhood Team!
